We were there in December and the Christmas Fair was already in place. The smell of their famous Kurtoskolac, mulled wine and homemade fried chips. This only complements the feel of history all around. The Jakawali Hassan Mosque is on the top of gthe square, where you can find the directions to the Pecs Cathedral as well. The top of the Kiraly utca, a great walking zone with loads of restaurants.

Besides having Mosque of Pasha Qasim, the City Hall, Zsolnay fountain and a lot of monuments at this square surrounded by pretty buildings, the uniqueness of Szechenyi ter is also in its slope. If you will stand near the Mosque and look down the square, you will be a lucky witness of a very pretty view, especially during dusk.We (a couple) also recommend you to visit McDonald's located at this square to have a quick meal while enjoying a view to the square that opens from the restaurant's big windows. And if you are going to hear a strange music similar to the one that comes from an ice cream truck, then it is time to run at the back of the Mosque to check St. Bartholomew’s Bell Tower. It is 21st century modern bell tower that automatically rings the bells and plays music only couple a times during day, so make sure not to miss the show!

This is the main square of Pecs and where you'll find yourself passing through several times daily during your visit. Very large, very impressive. I enjoy taking a slow panorama look around 180 degrees and counting and comparing architectural styles! Very nice place for an afternoon coffee at one of the nearby cafes.

We followed Rick Steves on his walking tour of Pecs and he gives a lot of history about the statues in this square. There was also a VERY large horse that had been designed by Leonardo da Vinci, but he was not able to execute his design. It was finally done as part of a recent da Vinci art exhibition.

Just sit and take in the old buildings which have been meticulously restored. There are free concerts and more locals than tourists. A real treat.

It's the right place to start your tour. It used to be a market, but now it's a pedestrian zone. Twelve streets run into the square, including the popular Király street. The square is surrounded by many important buildings and it's the home of the Trinity statue, the statue of János Hunyadi and while we were there since the Leonardo Exhibition was still opened, you could see a big 8.5-meter tall horse sculpture, a copy of the Colossus. The Mosque though is having some renovations done so you can't go inside, but it's still a nice sight to see from outside.

Széchenyi square is one of the most beautiful squares of a country town in Hungary. Unfortunately, you can't visit the mosque because it's under reconstruction. There is a lot of water (a fountain and water falls) and there are a lot of beautiful old buildings around the square. When we visited, there was a meeting of brass bands and mazhorette groups. In one of the museums of the museum street you can visit the da Vinci exhibition for a few weeks and meanwhile a huge horse stands in the foreground of the square, which is the replica of the Sforza horse designed by Leonardo.

This is as good a place as any to start a tour of the town. When we were there Michelangelo's horse was set up there as part of the Michelangelo exhibition which added greatly to the imposing impression of this square. Unfortunately the mosque at the top end was covered in scaffolding and closed to the public but just below it is a rather wonderful water installation reminiscent of Pamukkale in Turkey, a series of steps with water running down them which made for a very refreshing paddle. There are plenty of places to sit and have a coffee or an icecream and while away the time. The prime position on one corner is unfortunately occupied by a McDonalds, but that is nothing new these days.

This is the point all tours start. beautiful spacy place with the Mosque in the center. In fron of the Mosque you can see janos Hynjadi monument and in April was opened Leonardo da Vinci exhibition so the horse statue is set on the squere.

It is a very pleasant place, where people can either just walk around or sit down on a bench to enjoy the liveliness of Pécs. We can see the beginning of Király street and also can go to the most important cultural sights in just some minutes from Széchenyi square.

In July 2014 a huge statue of a horse (Leonardo's 'Gran Cavallo' as it would have been) in one of the bottom corners made it hard to appreciate the aesthetic balance of the square, while the top end was all scaffolding, cement mixers, pipes, etc from work on the church. The ivory and gold baroque town hall was gorgeous, though. Don't miss the decorative panels between the windows on the top storey. There are trees along the side opposite the town hall, which are a blessing if it's too hot to sit in the middle, as it was then. No traffic, but there's a taxi-rank about fifty yards away, just beyond the church.

Go there and take a walk from the Kossúth Tér parking lodge, cross the main streets leading to the magnificent Posta building with roof in Zsolnay porcelain, follow your route amongst roman remains and have a drink at Szechényi Tér, watch the old mosque, now the main church and walk on in this beautiful city....
  • HungaryHopper
Standing up and you can see it all there. Café and shops are all nearby and Pecs is part of Hungarian History that one must see. Can be seen all in one day. The Mosque which is now a church were closed for works. So unable to go in.
