humanly impossible to make this again. It is just unbelievable! Too bad you can only see it from a distance and through glass.

This statue of Michelangelo is the most beautiful work of Michelangelo. The details are perfect. The best period in year to visit Vatican places is in february and november.

I have seen this before, but the current lighting is horrible.Bring a small binocular with you, because they have moved you so far back, you can see the expressions or the muscles or any detail.

I saw the Pieta when it was at the Worlds Fair in New York when I was a teen. It was behind bulletproof glass, but the way it was lit, with a huge cross behind and deep blue background, let you focus on the statue itself. I must have been in the closer walkway because I remember the suppleness of the flesh when Mary's hand touched Jesus' body. Michelangelo turned marble to flesh. And yes, it's still there, mostly intact (after several nutcases attacked with hammer or paint) but difficult to ponder as it should be... the Basilica of St Peters is not a quiet place. It's crowded, hot, noisy and there are signs warning of pickpockets. The position of the statue is also not the best.... it's positioned behind glass (reflecting the the glare of windows behind the viewer) which has huge seams which are caulked sloppily. As typical with Italian workmanship, the glass was not exactly clean when we were there. The small alter the statue sits above is ugly, to say the least... with a background of garish brown tones of agate paneling. Too busy a background for contemplating such a magnificent work. Still, the Pieta is the Pieta, touched by the hand of the Master... it's the only one in the world, so one has to put up with the over-zealous St Peters and the throngs of tourists that haunt the place. As far as I'm concerned, anyone not treating this place like a church should be asked to leave... thin out the crowds for the people wanting to pray and people who really know and appreciate the art they are trying to saturate themselves with. Tourists wait on line for hours on end thinking they are entering a day at Disney. In the end, it would be nice if there were a way to get in quickly and with less crowds to see the few choice pieces in the Basilicata.... but it will only get worse.--Jerry grandvoyageitaly.weebly.com

all you heard is true. la pieta is amazing. once you see it you cant believe is marble. all these details make it like is going to come to life. to be honest ive always believed it to be bigger something grand. even though it is big is not as big as i imagined but it doesnt matter as youll not be disappointed.

This is one of the most beautiful statues i the world. You don't have to be religious to feel the suffering of Mary Mother of Jesus, or to understand the depth of Christ's sacrifice. It's definitely a must-see!

What I liked in La Pieta was the return of the artist to the feeling, I felt that the lap was true!!

It is beautiful, stunning and absolutely brilliant. Michangelo is a genius. Not much more needs to be said.

Just seeing this was worth the hour long wait to go through security before getting into St Peter's.It is amazing that a young Michelangelo sculpted this from a single slab of marble. The details, in particular Maria's dress drapes, her facial expression and the way the body of Jesus is positioned on her lap are absolutely stunning.

The queue could be 5 hrs long an it would still be worth it.I almost missed it, since it looks like any other statue from afar.Do yourself a favour and get close and observe the details. The sculpture is overwhelmingly live-like. I usually find sculptures boring but this one really made me feel something. It's a shame you can't get closer.

In a college art class I wrote a paper on La Pieta, so to say that that I was excited to see this piece was more than accurate. Waiting patiently for a clear view is a challenge, but I managed. The work is encased in protective glass, after having been vandalized by a mentally impaired individual. We were told it was repaired by using materials form the backside of the sculpture and they have taken steps to make sure it is secure for future generations to see with the glass enclosure and barricades. It was a little hard to get a good picture with the reflection, but my husband managed with the iPad (the camera was just too difficult ). The details are amazing and I had to pull myself away to be polite and return when the crowds thinned so that I felt like I had fully taken in what I was seeing.

Definetely a masterpiece, you can see it through a thick piece of glass but still can enjoy it. Normally is quite crowded but people goes away fast. Spend some time there looking a the facial expressions, the shadow and light of the wrinkles of the marble and it will speak to you.
