Knew of its existence for years and finally managed to visit and very glad of it. It’s a beautiful estate, and a home for the military of old, mainly from the former Dutch East Indies Army, and the museum telling the history of same is very well laid out and very very informative; well worth a visit for those who are interested in that period of history, or for everybody really :-)

A very interesting museum, especially when you're Indonesian, from Indonesian descent or into military history. This museum offers a beautiful insight about the history of the KNIL from weapons, souvenirs, personal stories and historical facts. There are also several monuments on the grounds of the Bronbeek.It's worth a visit. It probably takes about 2-3 hours for the regular visitor to visit this museum.The full name of this museum is: Koninklijk Tehuis voor Oud-Militairen en Museum Bronbeek (Royal home for Old Military soldiers and Museum Bronbeek). The building itself is beautiful and the history goes back to 1820. It's a former royal palace, bought by King Willem I in 1845I. He wanted to be a home for disabled KNIL soldiers when he donated the house to the Dutch state in 1859. Hence why this is a museum AND a home for eldery soldiers, connected to the KNIL (Royal Netherlands East Indies Army).

What a great idea: a veterans home with all the support of an age home linked to several large set of rooms devoted to the history and engagement between the Netherlands and its colonial possessions. I noted the multicultural nature of the residents (gentlemen with that military air even in their 80s and 90s) and the good quality collection of information (guns, artifacts, video, illustrations etc). For an Australian who has met Dutch who fled the Indies in the war, and fought to return, this was a special visit. Take the bus from Arnhem and get off at the clearly labelled stop. Walk the grounds and see the various memorials to those who served and suffered the Japanese occupation.

Go back in time and get some understanding of the colonial era of the Netherlands.A home for those who fought for the Netherlands in Indonesia when it was still a Dutch colony.The authenticity of the place where you can still find some these old solids called "Knillers" (which is derived from the acronym of Dutch/Indonesian Army)reminiscing in the halls.Large bronze canons, artefacts and scenery tell the story which is intriguing for young and old.

This review is perhaps dedicated to all Indonesians who have a chance to visit the Netherlands.I am from Indonesia, so as soon as I came to the NetherlandsI would like to know more about what the Dutch has in their country as a heritage of our close history in the past (the Colonialism)Bronbeek tells me about something that I would never learn in school when I was a kid.It was pretty honest - not totally honest actually - of a story from the side of the Dutch, which I would never know if I never came here.When you go there, just follow the story "room" based on their timeline, and little by little just feel the emotion.

We tried to get into this place twice yesterday we just gave up, today we perservered & won the day when Dutch AF sergeant opened a back door to the unmarked enterance. No exterior signs in English. Seems like some type of old soldiers retreat or homeThe upstairs exhibits were very good.Restaurant food & drinks very expensive plus not that brilliant....no better than the local Chinese but 3 times the price.

The museum gives a great inside look on the history of the Dutch (army) times in Indonesia. In the park you find many statues & monuments.

het is een prachtig gebouw, waarin "het verhaal van Indie" wordt weergegeven, met foto's, films en voorwerpen. Zeker de moeite waard om te bezoeken en dit onderbelichte deel van de nederlandse geschiedenis te zie en te horen. (Het is een tijdelijke tentoonstelling!).

Het mooie Bronbeek; ik had het al vaak gezien als ik er langs kwam, en afgelopen jaar heb ik het goed kunnen bekijken. De prachtig door Koning Willem III heeft het destijds laten bouwen voor de oude Knil-soldaten die geen familie hadden, waar ze konden blijven en later kwam er een Koloniaal-museum bij, dus over de Knil, het Koninklijk Indsche Leger dat ook werkte in West-Indie. Het geheel is een stuk geschiedenis.Het is mooie verzameling van wapens zoals prachtig bewerkte krissen, schilderijen en een uitgebreide bibliotheek. Ook heel interessant als je een koloniale stamboom achtergrond hebt en met een stamboom wil beginnen. Bovendien een mooie architectonisch gebouwde villa met een grote prachtige bijpassend tuin, een park wat echt een wandeling waard is.En omdat de "Knilmannetjes" aan het lokale eten gewend waren in de kolonien, eten ze ook hier hun rijst en voor ons is er een restaurant waar je aardige Indische hap kunt krijgen voor een redelijke prijs.Annette

Leuk is dat je met de bewoners kunt praten. Bovendien kun je er op bepaalde momenten ook heerlijk indisch eten

Bronbeek is een verzorgingshuis voor oud militairen. In het museum is de geschiedenis te vinden van oa de Indische Nederlanders. Op 28 november jl. Is er een themamiddag 'een nieuw begin' georganiseerd. Met medewerking van singer-songwriter Wouter Muller en band, Linda Huijsmans (auteur), Marjolein van Asdonck (hoofdredacteur Moesson) en Christina Meijer (redacteur Kasuaris). Host is Marscha Holman.Na hun vertrek uit Nederlands-Indië maakten vele Indische Nederlanders en Molukkers een nieuw begin in Nederland. Wat bracht dit nieuwe begin hen en vooral: waar heeft dat nieuwe begin van destijds toe geleid bij generaties van nu. Een zeer interessante middag en voor mij vele bekende anekdotes. De middag werd afgesloten met een heerlijke Indische maaltijd. Voor herhaling vatbaar.

Hier wordt niet alleen het Indisch Leger uit de doeken gedaan ook het leed van de Nederlandse bevolking tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog in de Japanse Kampen wordt haarfijn uitgelegd, met foto's en dergelijke.

Bij het op zich al indrukwekkende museum, dat de geschiedenis van Nederlands-Indië weergeeft, hoort een doorlopende tentoonstelling van militairen die naar verschillende oorlogsgebieden zijn uitgezonden hebben hun ervaringen verbeeld in schilderijen en andere kunstwerken : om stil van te worden.

Indrukwekkende expositie. Geweldig informatief over wel en wee in het Verre Oosten. Enige minpunt is de opzet van het japanse gedeelte. Bij het betreden van deze zaal moet je naar beneden kijken om de tekst te lezen. Achterin de zaal hangt echter de japanse vlag. Indië-gangers en vele anderen ervaren dit niet positief, wordt gezien als buigen voor de japqanse vlag
