This is the area for great afternoon and sunset photos! There are really fun compositions if you are willing to hike and explore. It's well worth the effort. You can create so many great bridge photos from these Obs points! Take your time and bring some water and a headlamp in case your out a bit late!

We covered a part of the area on the HOHO bus tour as it criss crossed the Golden Gate bridge. .Much of the land was formerly used by the United States Army and is managed by the National Park Service. It attracts more than 13 million visitors a year. The park contains tourist attractions such as Muir Woods National Monument, Alcatraz, and the Presidio, the former army base.

There isn't a more beautiful Coastline that offers views like this anywhere. Bring your camera. Most areas have free access. In the North its like the White Cliffs of Dover and sweet lighthouses. In the south red bluffs rise from the sea. Where ever you go in this Park System it is Golden.

Beautiful rugged landscapes, and great views back to the city. It's really impressive. We biked across the bridge, and it was a great experience.

The GGNRA used to be part of the federal military reservation, that protected San Francisco and the Golden Gate, during WWII, Korea and Vietnam... There are still many reinforced concrete fortifications and ammunition bunkers, sites that once held 16-inch Naval Artillery "rifles, that could launch i ton shells over 20 miles, none of which were ever fired in anger...Part of the GGNRA is up in the Marin Headlands, with a truly picture postcard photo op; also, on weekends, there are guided tours of the Point Bonita Lighthouse, where you hike through a tunnel and over a cabled pedestrian suspension bridge... The views are breathtaking... There are the foundations for a once Secret Nike Anti-Missile base, that once protected San Francisco from the Russian Nuclear Ballistic Missiles that, thankfully, never came... To make certain you see everything, buy a GGNRA map of the area...

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area was set up to protect a large portion of the city and coast for enjoying it's views, history and countryside. Each area offering a unique experience. It is incredible what they have done to preserve the Presidio alone and worth the drive around. The headlands offer another experience that is unique. Enjoy this part of the San Francisco Experience.

Great Museums, Botanical Gardens and walking trails. It's a beautiful place to visit. This area is near numerous stores and restaurants, and is easy to access via public transportation. also Segway tours are available.

This is NOT a swimming beach. Northern California ocean temperature makes swimming uncomfortable unless you have a wet suit. So why go there? Because it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the US. You can walk for a couple of miles and see seals, pelicans, Marbled Godwits (if you walk the beach in the winter), sandpipers, etc. There are 3 restaurants which offer warmth and great local comfort food on a cold or foggy day, summer or winter. If the sun is shining, it is glorious. Yes, this is where those of us who live in Marin go every chance we get.

I parked at the Lands End Visitors Center, located in the Merrie Way park just east of the Cliff House at the cross streets of Point Lobos, El Camino del Mar in San Francisco, California.Plenty of free parking (both in the lot of the VC and just across the street). There is also a lot of free parking along the beach side of the street, although I believe there are time restrictions. Amazing views, I walked over to The Cliff House to see from a different view, then back up to the Visitors Center and along the trail. Definitely a good walk, depending on where you want to go and how far you go there can be a lot of steps, but well worth the views. I did not walk down to the Sutra Baths ruins, but they are located directly down from the VC. I followed the Coastal Path, and walked to the Lands End Overlook for great views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Continued along to Eagles Point Overlook then turned back and stopped at the USS San Francisco Memorial on the way back. A really nice walk, great views, and the VC even has very nice and clean restrooms located just on the outside of the building. Lovely morning exploring. :)

The year was 1776. Back east, patriots in fancy powdered wigs, shiny buckled shoes and feather quill pens gathered around handcrafted burred walnut tables to craft important pieces of parchment. It was different in San Francisco, yet unborn. Find out what was going on in the new, free Heritage Gallery inside the renovated Officer's Club in the Presidio. Fabulous. And the views are free, too, of course. A new Mexican restaurant, Arguello, is run by one of the city's best chefs and has an outdoor terrace.

For 48 years, going to California has been on my mother's bucket list and walking across the Golden Gate Bridge was definitely the highlight of her trip and I have to admit, probably the highlight of mine as well. It's much longer than it looks, but the high winds will keep you cool as you cross and even if the fog sets in, the view is spectacular. We stopped a number of times to watch ships as they went under the bridge, once to watch dolphins, and once to watch some surfers for around half an hour. When you come from a landlocked state, dolphins and surfers are actually pretty novel and worth watching! The gift shop wasn't too bad either. If you're feeling up for it, the Presidio is right next door, so to speak, across a parking lot and about 2 lanes of traffic.

Sandy beaches, sand dunes, picnic and barbecue areas. Large nature reserve and lake close to the edge of the bay. It feels like you are miles from civilisation but it is only a short walk from the city.

This recreational park near the bridge is a great picnic spot . Get a great view of the bridge , enjoy some hot coffee, pick up mementoes from the gift shop and just soak in the beauty of the surrounding. Another great place to visit in San Fransisco.
