I could spend all day here (and often have). Most people probably have an endurance of a few hours, which isn't even close enough to see everything. There are often new exhibits and presentations, so check the web site for schedules. Parts of the museum may be closed while the exhibitions are prepared and removed, but there is so much in the collection that it shouldn't matter. The American art collection is amazing and is easily one of the best in the world. There is an entire room dedicated to the work of John Trumbull (who is also buried under the museum). There are many examples of decorative arts, such as silver work and furniture, spanning a few centuries. There are two whole rooms installed in the gallery which were removed from Colonial homes that were going to be drowned in a reservoir. You will probably find at least one item produced by every major American artist of the past 300 years. The collection is broadly divided by the originating culture (e.g., American, Japanese, etc.) and time period. You should look at the floor plan available on the web site to plan your visit, it's easy to get lost inside and it would be disappointing to miss something you want to see. Also take time to appreciate the actual buildings housing the collection - they are works of art in themselves.Admission is free, though they have a donation box at the door. There is a small book store near the lockers; it is far more low-key than it had been in previous years. The lockers require a quarter for the key to operate; you get the quarter back when the key is returned. There are several restaurants, cafes, and bars within easy walking distance if you need refreshment. Parking in New Haven is terrible as it always has been, and you're probably best off parking in the Chapel-York Garage and walking the short distance.

I have been to several Museums and Art Gallery's in the U.S. and around the world and I was extremely pleased with the quality of the objects. It is not the hugest Gallery but there is a little bit of everything. My favorites were the Asian and European art galleries. It took me about 2-2.5 hours to see everything. I live about an hour and a half away from Yale but it was totally worth the little day trip to see such amazing art.

What a lovely place to spend some time while visiting our son in New Haven. He took great pride in bringing us to the gallery to show us the wonderful collections housed there, in particular the Van Gogh. But even he discovered lots of new pieces he hadn't seen on previous visits. We had visited the Met museum in NY a couple of days previously which is of course stunning and huge, however, I have to confess I found the Yale art gallery a lot more enjoyable with a lot less walking! We would definitely say this is a must see when in New Haven, whether you have a half hour or several hours to spare.

It never ceases to amaze me how you can just wander into this place, unencumbered by crowds or an admission price, and see such an immense variety of world class art and antiquities in a compact and easy to navigate space. Living in and around New Haven, you get to feel like this is your own art collection, because of the ease of getting in, the lack of crowds, and the unobtrusive staff. If you are an American, or interested in American history, do not miss the Trumbull gallery. Who would have ever thought that this collection would not have found its way to the National Gallery? If you don't know what is in there, I won't spoil it for you completely - come and see - but it's all the paintings/pictures that were in you US History text book in high school.A few years back, Starry Night and Cypresses came to the Gallery on loan for maybe a month or two. I made an 'appointment' online to view them, and my family and I went and had 30 minutes in a 10 foot by 15 foot room alone with both paintings. What a thrill!

A superlative collection that spans history and cultures - if you are in New Haven and have any interest in art, this is a must. The staff provides regular lectures and activities around current exhibits and important pieces from their permanent collection; the only complaint is that they are often held early afternoon, making it difficult to get to some of these. If you are an educator within the state, the education staff here offers amazing activities catered to your needs. I have brought high school classes here several times as part of a unit of literary study and my students have loved it.

A world-class museum! I would recommend that people take a look at the website before coming. There is too much to see in one visit, but particular areas can give several hours of satisfying looking and study. I particularly recommend the Pre-Columbian or Dura-Europas collections on the first floor or any of the special exhibitions. If you have kids, ask at the information desk for special activities. The museum is free, so you can make multiple visits if you're so inclined!

Living overseas, I only get to New Haven every year or so, but every time I aim make this museum one of my first stops. The galleries here are always full of stimulating work I've not seen before, and the way the work is curated is always exceptional.

Wonderful museum. Many floors of art - surprised to find a Dali and a few Picassos. Monets, Manets and Degas were a surprise too. Did not kno Degas painted horses. Would have loved to stay longer but meter running out.

This is a spectacular art gallery, with an exciting college of contemporary paintings in beautiful frames. The lovely spaces go on and on. We can't wait to return next time we visit Yale.

I have visited this art gallery for over over 50 years and it's new and exciting every time I walk through the doors. The permanent pieces are all must see and the new shows never cease to amaze me. No matter what period you enjoy or what style you like it is here for you. Open and spacious each room is very different. Bring a lunch and eat in the outdoor enclosed courtyard for a memorable experience, Bring a camera to capture the beauty of the courtyard itself. School trips are encouraged and the guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. Plan on spending the full day.

As others have mentioned the recent renovation has kicked things up a few notches, this in now a world class museum equal to any in the country. Coupled with the British collection across the street( slated for its own renovation as I write) this is a worthy destination for anyone visiting Boston, New York, or Providence.
