My husband and I had a private, free tour of this amazing home. Horatio Colony was a wealthy man who left his home to the town as a museum. It is chock full of eclectic furnishings and bibelots and so worth a visit. Fantastic!!!!

This little museum and the 25-minute tour provided are both perfectly curated -- not too much, not too little.

I came across the home taking a walk in downtown Keene. The house is gorgeous, the furnishings are beautiful and the tour was 1-1 and very informative. There are many gorgeous antiques in this historic home and the tour is free. I highly recommend the tour to anyone who wants to get a taste of old New England living.

Well preserved mansion of an industrial revolution family. Beautiful furnishings, interesting tour guide and it's free. Just knock on the door and she'll let you in. Takes about a half hour and well worth it.

The Horatio Colony Museum is a historical house turned museum. It features original artifacts owned by Horatio Colony and the rest of his family including antique furniture, original paintings and artwork, and various collectables. For people interested in history, this house demonstrates how the bourgeoisie lived in a then up and coming mill town. Perhaps the most interesting part of the tour are the two family portraits on the second floor of the house, whose gazes appear to follow you as you walk by. The tour is free, but donations are welcomed (and not solicited).

Stopped in to learn a bit more about the area. The house was well maintained and everything is as it was when the last owner lived there. The tour guide was friendly and seemed knowledgable but the tour was very rushed. It's free but a donation was suggested at the end. Interesting home with a lot of history. Some fun paintings of family members that seem to move depending on where you are in the room (tour guide pointed that out). Would recommend if you are interested in learning more about the area.

I've had a lake house outside of Keene, NH for 15 years and had never gone to this house museum. Well, the weather was cold and rainy this past Memorial Day weekend do we ventured to Keene. The Horatio Colony Museum was just opening. The four of went in were absolutely delighted by the treasures and collections in this federal style home. AND! It's free. 18th century furnishings and artifacts from Horatio's travels a-plenty. Our docent was eloquent and very knowledgeable. We didn't walk around outside but the gardens are probably lovely, too. Just wonderful.

We went to the Candle night tour - the people were full of information of the history of the building and previous owners.

The write-ups really should tell a visitor about the 3/4 mile vitually straight up the mount! Very enjoyable time once one acclimated to the steepness. Of course the loop down was just as nasty requiring boulder/rock jumping in place - good that I had my sticks to give balance and support.

You must give this a go..they are super friendly and informative. Step back in time and enjoy this Old New England property. When my twin girls were young they attended a Teddy Bear Tea Party out in the yard...all the little girls were all dressed up, it was fabulous! The tour of the house does not take long, and they are super friendly, and informative.

You can get a feel for living in a different time by touring this home of one of Keene's more prominent families of the past. Check the hours before you come, they are open seasonally.
