Many of the families with Italian heritage originally settled in the area to become tobacco farmers. As tobacco farming was phased out they turned to being wine producers. After a number of years they are now well established and have an enviable reputation for quality and a breathtaking number of variety of wine being produced. The Politini label includes Sangiovese, Nero D’avola and Greciano.Mrs Josie Politini introduced us to the wines being produced at this family run winery. They are of excellent quality and are very reasonably priced. A discount is offered for anyone wanting to join the wine club. Members are requested to purchase at least two boxes of wine per yearThe parking area for the cellar door is at the bottom of a small hill. If a number of bottles are purchased it may be worth driving up the hill to collect the boxes.

This is a family run winery, Nonna serves the wine, and gives advice about Italian cooking. The Burley Shed red is a great buy for those summer BBQ's. Named after the sheds that were needed for the cigar tobacco leaves, the crop before grapes that the Italians planted in the valley.

One thing I love about the King valley are the numerous varieties of wine not grown anywhere else in Australia (sometimes not even grown back in their 'home country' anymore). Politini is a classic 2nd+ generation family owned vinyard specialising in Mediterranean varieties. Try the range of varieties, we were surprised by the variety- as I do get sick of tasting the popular varieties only at other wineries. You feel at home, as the hospitality of the owners is tremendous. They might even play a few old favourite Italian love songs on the piano accordian. I was told they even conduct salami making courses... Best time to go to the King valley is November, during the Dolce Vita weekend festival.

We booked in and made salami last weekend. We had a great day- came home with 10 salami and had a great lunch and morning tea- all hand made by Josie at Politini. Sam ran the day and was very encouraging. He really told you everything you wanted to know about the process and made you believe you could do it yourself at home. His accordion playing during lunch was pretty good too I thought!
