We had heard a lot about the wreck in the middle of nowhere. We decided to make a visit and see ourselves. There are no directions from the main motor way however you will have to use GPS to locate. It’s not at all visible from far. We thought we only lost in middle of nowhere… LOL… finally we could see it. the fact that it has been there for about 40 years, don't expect it to be maintained. It gives great opportunity for photography. Can spend some time and continue onward to your destination.

We wouldn't have found this without our tour guide and our 4x4 truck. It is odd to have the wreckage of a plane on a glacier floodplain that you can just climb onto and around so it makes for a photo opportunity. I hope it is true like our guide said that all of the passengers survived. The kids enjoyed exploring it but be careful because there are some holes and sharp edges.

We had a 4x4 so were confident we would be fine, there were non 4x4s ventureing with a little snow on the ground. The route is well marked from the road and you need to stick with it as the plane is hidden until the last minute.

one of the weirdest attractions I have ever visited. the plane lies on an obscure beach far from the ring road. you need to have a good 4*4 vehicle to reach here, although we could spot people in normal sedans too.

This place is easy to miss and not signposted. They reckon you need a 4WD for the track, I had one but I reckon you'd be fine in a 2WD. The turn off is to the south about 2-3km east of the 221 road that goes to Myrdasjokull Glacier. There is a gate and a cattle grid and a sign saying 4WD only and about 500m after the road starts there are some yellow markers to help you find the plane. Once you're on the right road you won't get lost If you zoom in on google maps or type into google maps 'path to wrecked dc-3 plane' you will find it.

A place not to be missed. The wreck of the plane is superb for photos and surprisingly open for anyone to see and climb inside if you wish. It's a shame that some disrespectful people have added graffiti to the plane taking advantage of its remote location and accessibility, but it remains a place most definitely worth visiting. The track from the main road is unmarked - you just have to know where to find it. For the record, it's near to the river and you drive over a cattle grid which has a gate to its right-hand side. The plane is about 1km along this road.

This is a crashed US airforce plane which has been there since 1972 and there is a surprising amount of it left. It is not a place where you would spend hours but it is interesting to see and no one lost their lives so it is not spooky, just odd to see sitting there on the wild beach.

The good thing about this plane wreck is that no-one was injured, otherwise it would seem almost sacrilegious to be walking around it. It is a longish drive, on a sand/gravel track, so not recommended for ordinary cars. You need to do a bit of research beforehand to find the location of the plane, and gateway, but it is worth the trip.A strange photographic experience.

A must see if you like photography, want to see something unique, feel extremely isolated, fancy driving off-road!As has been said before, do some research prior to heading out. It seems there are 2 main ways of getting to the wreckage, one involves crossing the river and the other doesn't. We came down route 1 from the West so took the non-wet route which is an entrance a few hundred metres beyond the 221. I thought it would be difficult to find, driving over black volcanic soil but the land owner has marked a path all the way so is easy to find.Would strongly recommend NOT attempting this in anything but a 4x4 as we had to dig out a stranded vw polo down by the wreckage (they had ventured off the marked path though). It's a brilliant place to take photos and have an explore, it's not everyday you get up close to something like this. The off-roading is good fun too (off-roading is illegal in Iceland but seems to be overlooked here)

What can I say about this location especially for photography. We went twice to this location one for a star trail shoot and the other was for the Aurora Borealis which we were lucky to get. It's a little difficult to find but research before you go and you'll find quite easy to find then. When you turn off the main road yellow markers take to down to the location it's a way down but keep driving. You will need a 4x4 or and mini bus that can with stand the gravel road, maybe a little difficult for a mainstream car BUT not impossible if you take your time. It's a very eerie place especially at night but wild open and just bloody Fantastic... Enjoy !!!!

The site itself is a little strange - to say one 'enjoys' seeing a plane crash is a little off / eerie even, but the journey to finding the site and being able to walk through the wreckage of the plane was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You can only access the site if you have a 4x4 and perhaps some insider knowledge / help as there aren't any posted signs that tell you where to pull off the road to start the off-road drive. We found the GPS coordinates off of a webpage, but of course the GPS doesn't know how to navigate you to the place (we're city drivers!) ... anyhoo, driving towards Vik once you've passed the GPS coordinates (parallel to the road) you've gone too far, and just want to circle back to the first opportunity to make a left onto the vast black sand. You know you're in the right location when you past through the gates and see a sign that indicates '4x4 only' and start to see a series of yellow stakes towards your left that lead you to the site. Very bumpy off-road driving for about 1.5 miles, we saw mostly official tour jeeps, and only a few private/rental vehicles on our way out there.

Happened upon this sight. No big deal, just a couple of wings from a plane on the side of the road. I wouldn't go out of your way to see it, but if you come across it en route, worth a stop.
  • Matthew_Wall
We walked out towards the plane, as I wanted to get some shots of it, but we were defeated by 8ft of fast flowing glacial run off! I still rate is as excellent, and will certainly return to get my shots on another trip!

Came here as we had a bit of sunshine left and didn't want to waste it in the hotel - not a lot to see really, but the drive down is quite fun in a 4x4!
