This world heritage site is a very good thing to see. It is the site of old Lulea. A true market town with an amazing old church built around the time of the reformation. The day we were there the organist was playing. It was quite wonderful.

Very nice place to go for a stroll around the small church houses and the church is very nice too. Good area for kids to play at "Hägnan" and a good cosy place for a picknick in the sun. Otherwise nice familiar café

Sure, if you are passing through, it's worth stopping for 5 minutes to see the church (although there was nothing too unique about it). When we stopped in and asked what there was to see around town, even the man at the tourist information center for Gammelstad thought for a while, shrugged his shoulders, and said 'Not much, I guess you could go see the church'. I think if the person whose job it is to tell us tourists what to see can't even come up with anything, it's not a great sign. So I suggest that unless it is on the way, don't bother.

Fantastic! So beautiful and we lost track of the time. After two hours of fun we ate some wonderful elk in a restaurant!

This UNESCO site is only about 8km from town. take the no9 bus (runs everyhour in the winter) and it takes about 25minutes. In the winter an hour (ie get the next bus back) was sufficient time to look around the town, visit the church and have a brief look in the gift shop.

We baptist our sixth grandchild in the Church, and meanwhile we walk around the Church village, and it was really a experiece,we can really recomend a visit.

What a great find. Beautifully kept, sleepy town where real people live and work. In September, the restaurants were closed but the positive part was complete lack of crowd. The tourist information center has a very good exhibit and a fabulous video. These two give a comprehensive history lesson of the place. The shop-in-lapland is a very good shop to buy local arts and objects. The nearby open air museum with all sorts of homes is yet another interesting place to wander around. We spent about 5 hours total here. My husband painted and I just walked around. We even met and had coffee and biscuits with some local residents. A wonderful place. We had a car and we drove there but one can get there by local bus from Luleo downtown easily.

It was about 8 kilometers from our hotel to Gammelstad so we took our car. There is an old stone church that dates from the 1500's and several hundred old red wooden houses that were used by people when they came to town for church. There is also an open air museum with several old buildings and people dressed in costumes doing various things. It's a nice place to visit and walk around for a couple of hours.

which happens to be the year Columbus discovered America or re-discovered it long after Leif Eriksson's first visit. The church village in Gammelstad is a must see when visiting the area. It is UNESCO world heritage site. World famous botanist Carl Linnaeus came to Gammelstad during midsummer in 1732. He wrote (loosely translated) "If the summers are shorter here than elsewhere in the world, I insist they are more pleasant. I have never in my life lived more wholesome than now" and as far as I can tell that still holds true.

I came here twice, once to tour the little village, and then that evening to attend a summer concert in the old church. I wasn't disappointed both times. I definitely recommend this world heritage site as a 'must do'.But time your visit so as to join a guided your. The staff put in a lot of effort to make the tour, in English, interesting and worthwhile. The guide knew the history well. I was thrilled by it.The buildings gave enough photographic opportunities, and for the young, the exposure to farm life was educational, although there weren't many activities to keep one there for too long.I didn't have enough time to visit the shops, such a pity.I found the church a fitting venue for the concert. I had flown more than 12 hours the previous day so I didn't do justice to the splendid performance by falling asleep.

This is a must see place. The church is nice and relatively rich of decorations. The old town nearby is lovely. Unfortunately the season is quite short, so check well in advance if you hope to find something open. We found a nice coffe house and one shop still open.

Small beautiful church village near Lulea, Unesco world heritage, it's easy to reach by bus from Lulea, and I advice the guided tour at the local tourist office, the staff is well prepared and really nice and helpful

An interesting site to see, absolutely. But I doubt that you will spend hours strawling around this block, filled with little red cabins. A tip is to find a local guide or someone with historical knowledge to tell you more about Gammelstad, otherwise you might leave here without knowing what you really saw.

Gammelstad in Lulea is just magnificent. The quaint little houses are awe inspiring to look at and the unforgettable architecture of the church blows the mind away. From the brilliant looking organs to the biblical depiction of Christ. If you had to go to one place in Lulea, it would be Gammelstad. It is unforgettable!
