The museum holds several rooms which give you various galaries and interactive art from which kids can learn general history and adult are able to see what the roll of the Varmland region was during the periods addressed. Additionally there was a big hall where kids, and of course KAU students, could perform science with mirrors, lasers and static electricity. If you are in the neighbourhood, it is worth the couple of Kronar entrence fee.

This is a museum to be enjoyed by young and old alike. The displays are fascinating, depicting the history of Varmland. Very accessible on one main floor. The museum is arranged from the oldest history to present. This is a place not to miss if you are traveling in central Sweden.

Have been here many times - with children, friends and business partners from abroad. Like the permanent exhibitions and the contrast of the old and new building. Nice café often with well prepared Swedish dishes. Next to the museum is the extraordinary art gallery filled with amazingly beautiful paintings by painter Lars Lerin. That in itself is worth a visit.

This delightful building, with Art deco influence, is a combination of tarditional Swedish red wood with stone/brick. The inner courtyard is quite special and can be seen from inside. The museum has a reasonable selection of 19th and 20th century Swedish works but only a few can be exhibited at one time, due to the small space available - some of which is quite rightly used for temporary exhiobitions by living artists. Of the historical works, look out for Fritz Lindstrom's 'Elden', a truly iconinc Swedish painting of women by a lake in Varmland. A fine mural by Prince Eugen covers one wall upstairs. There is a superb plaster model of a skater by Christian Ericsson, the sculptor of the Royal Dramatic Theatre facade in Stockholm. Of modern artists, I recommend Kenneth Borjesson, although his works are not always on display.

They have a rather small, but interesting exhibition about the history of Värmland. They have also some paintings, most Swedish works and during the summer temporary exhibitions with Swedish artist, this summer the photographer Carl-Johan de Geer.

A modern museum that pays tought to both the grown up who can choose from the fixed exhibition and the ones that alternate. The children has an experimental department where they can try out different fysical experiments. The restaurant is nice to sit in with large windows so that you can sit and watch people passing by. The food exelent and with a buffet lunch so that you don´t risk leaving hungry.

Visited this Museum when I was at a loose end. It doesn't have much in English, although some exhibits do have translated material as well as Swedish. It's not a huge building. There are lots of different types of exhibits to see. There is one about the industrial history of the city. Another is a photographic exhibit which features lots of old cameras as well as photographs. There are children's activities areas where they can build things using Lego. The best thing about this place is the pleasant café which has healthy nutritious options for all tastes. Simple set-up but very enjoyable. Take a seat by the window and admire the world going by through the park.

I arrived by train from Trollhattan on my way to Arvika and Oslo. Left my luggage in the lockers at the train station. Enjoyed an easy walk to the Varmlands Museum just in time for a superb lunch buffet. I have had hot poached or grilled salmon and cold smoked salmon, but this was the first time I had ever had whole salmon, smoked and served hot. Delicious! And the Swedish pancakes with lingon sauce were perfect. The modern interior felt cozy with all the wood. Many locals and families were enjoying the buffet. Staff were so friendly. And the museum was fascinating with enough innovative displays to keep even the most seasoned culture lover interested. Don't miss the art gallery. The varied art works provide something of interest for eveyone. Great gift shop featuring local textiles. Adjacent park along the river on the north side of the river features unique landscape architecture worth exploring via the footpath along the river. Nearby tourist center was also super helpful.

A nice museum if you´re interested in the history of Värmland. Be sure to bring your kids - there´s a large section for them with all kids of experiments and stuff to do.

Visited this museum when I passed thru Karlstad and was happy that I did. It consists of two parts, one outlining the rich local history and an art gallery of surprisingly high quality for a smaller town. Allow a few hours to see both and then take a nice walk in the park and along the river just next door.

The museum concentrates on local themes with very well-designed displays and inter-active material for children. The special exhibitions area seems to concentrate on the work of local artists. It is in a small but purpose built building, with a well-stocked shop which sells local crafts. One major asset is the excellent cafe - on Sundays this serves a buffet lunch with a really good selection of dishes. It is not cheap (restaurants in Sweden never are), around £20 a head, but everything is included and you really can eat as much as you want. This is a very pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
