Well worth visiting on a sunny day. Stop at the vista point on the eastern side high above the lakes for the best view. Further to the east along the mountain ridge road are two ancient (but not Roman) aquaducts.

Spectacular views, good hiking, stay away from slippery edges, be prepare for changing weather, use guided tour if you can.

We took a UTV tour with ANC Moto (separate review) and it was AMAZING! Definitely a highlight of our week spent on Sao Miguel. The area around Sete Cidadas is breaktakingly beautiful (the entire island is, actually). Don`t miss the abandoned hotel for incredible views of the caldeira.

Not to miss! Breathtaking views to the Blue and Green Lagoon - and excellent possibilities to access and to hike.

We took a jeep tour of Sete Cidades, the town of Lagoa and Fire Lake through Futurismo tours, and it was absolutely amazing. Unfortunately we had the bad luck that it was the only rainy day of our vacation, but it was mainly in the morning and we got some amazing views and shots the second half of the day. You need a lot of luck to see the two lakes at their peak blue and green beauty, our guide admitted it is often gray especially in the morning, but it was still gorgeous nonetheless. We saw five different rainbows throughout the day due to the on and off rain, which apparently is quite common there. Our guide Sandy was very knowledgeable and impressive, and spoke English, French, German and Portuguese fluently. This is the must-see area in the Azores, and other than renting your own car if you prefer, (be warned some of the roads near the top can be quite daunting and guard rails do not exist there) I highly recommend using Futurismo tours.

Go in good weather to be blown away by the sight. But go in bad weather to get the lay of the land and chech out the sites you'll see only when visibility is limited.

My wife and I decided to hike the perimeter and down into the town. There is a walking trail around the edge and the whole length is a fantastic view. In town there are several restaurants with one of them being a quaint little place in the center that has great food and on Fridays and Saturdays even has a huge buffet with many of the regional foods. A great thing to do if you are hesitant about trying eel, octopus, and other fishes. Along the shore of the blue lake, there is a tunnel through the mountain that is open to walk through all the way to the ocean side that was built to relieve high water from flooding the town. You need a flashlight as the length is almost a mile long, but it is definitely an adventure. If you walk the trail, make sure to negotiate with a local person to give you a ride back to the top, as it took 3 hours walking up the grueling switch back road to where our car was parked at the trail head. This place is so peaceful (at least in February) with church bells, no traffic, and an occasional cow moo or dog bark. Most people visiting the island will eventually come here revues or no, but look for these little extra things.

Small fee but worth it and bring your bathing suitPictures cape ,looks like your in the middle of no where, summer time gets busy but during off season it's even better.

We had a tour with Azores Wonderful visiting the green and blue lakes, our driver took us the scenic way so no coaches or crowds..well worth seeing, lovely views on the way. Take a private tour as you have more time to take pictures as the driver doesn't hurry you.

After twisting and turning on the journey it was a great surprise to see the terrain open out and to see the two volcanic lakes (Green and Blue Lake). The village of Sete Cidades on the shore is surrounded by the dark forest covered walls of the Caldeira and it is the most spectacular volcanic scene ever! Do stop to see the view from above. Wow!!

You would never expect the scenery u find after the twists and turns. The 2 lakes are spectacular. It feels like being at the cottage, yet u r in the middle of the atlantic. A must see if u come to sao miguel.

loved every second of it, it was absolutely stunning. Would definitely return because I did not get nice pictures the first time around!

These two lakes and the surrounding village are breathtakingly beautiful. Starting from the top you can clearly see the craters and the colors. The view is amazing. There is also an abandoned hotel that would be neat to explore, but it is closed off.

This is a must see while in Sao Miguel. The views are amazing and it's a relatively easy hike. Bring lots of water and a snack.
