It is THE place around Chadds Ford to learn about our history. It has old-old stuff, and fairly new stuff. Always a good time

They pay such beautiful homage to a time forgotten by most. The scenery is of course beautiful made exquisite by period homes. Great for educating kids about a different time.

Two wonderfully restored eightteenth century houses--John Chads House and Barns-Brinton House (a colonial tavern) as well as great family events--Chadds Ford Days (weekend after Labor Day) and Pumpkin Carve (Thursday, Friday and Saturday before Halloween). They also have a house tour of local homes the first Saturday in December--great to "peek" into how other people live and see fantastic houses in the community. Also have an educational program for kids and school tours. A great value

We were visiting Longwood Gardens and always love touring historic Stone and Colonial house so its just natural we planned to stop at the Chadds Ford Historical Society site. First thing to note is that two house plus a small barn museum is available to tour so give yourself at least 2.5 hrs as one house is 2 miles down the road. Both the John Chad and Barns-Brinton House were beautifully restored and Kudos to our resident costumed tour guides, Mary (Upper part of the house tour person) and a very lovely warm young women manning the Beehive oven baking fresh bread (yes, we bought some and it was great!) in the lower level kitchen area.If this wasn't enough, the tour staff over at the Barns-Brinton House (Olivia and Dustin) were very knowledgeable as well and a delight to talk with. We can't wait to go back. Now, if that wasn't just wonderful, The Barn Visitors Center. was manned by a very friendly, helpful young gentlemen (summer intern .. apologies but recalling names are not my strong point LOL). All in All, we had a wonderful time and cant wait to go back again. On a side note, this sight does not receive founding other than what it raises on its own, so please be generous and support them with a visit and contribution. $5 per person to tour is such a bargain in this day.

The CFHS administers 3 buildings and the Barn Visitors Center. The buildins pre-date the Revolutionary War and include the c. 1714 Barnes-Brinton House, c.1717 John Chads Springhouse and the c. 1725 John Chads House. You will learn about the area that became Chads Ford and the prominant families that settled there, including the Barnes, Brinton and John Chads' family. You will learn what life was like before and during the American Revolution and how important this area was. Nearby is the Brandywine Battlefield (not run by the CFHS), where one of the improtant battles of the Revolutionary War was fought. Please check out my photos on Flickr of the site. It is worth the trip to see for yourself.
