This health saw the Civil War from both sides, wealth and failure, a scandal of betrayal and revenge and generations of living. Carefully restored and re-created, you can see life in Knoxville of the 19th C and a look into a family that couldn't find peace. All this and lovely views. Fine guides. Take time to readh the displays.

If you are interested in history, this is a a great house to see. It was built a few years before the American Civil War, Both Armies occupied this home during this period, The same family lived in this home for most of the last 200 years. Therefore the home contains all the original furniture, a rarity in most historic house museums. This house is well worth the visit, our guide did a great job, we are thinking a return visit to Knoxville. There was a small charge of $5.00.

This was a last minute stop on the way to the airport and ended up being the best thing we did on vacation. We loved this lovely old mansion and it's oh so interesting history. If you want to see a pre civil war home with all the original furnishings, toys, dishes and even some clothing then this is the place for you. Call ahead so you can walk right on a tour and it's only $5. Compared to $59 for Biltmore-which we also visited on this trip-this is a bargain. And we enjoyed it so much more! Don't miss this fantastic home and it's story.

We were looking for somewhere to stop along our travels, and found this historic site on the 'things to do in knoxville' list. We are so glad that we stopped! We called ahead and left a message that we were coming later in the afternoon (the website reccommends this, as it si run by volunteers). We arrived later in the afternoon. We parked right in the front driveway. The tour guide (Calvin) greeted us and the tour began! The home is very well maintained, Calvin was able to give us some insight on the work that has been done to the home. The story of this family is unique and very interesting! I've never heard about this family before, but my husband and I both left wanting to learn more. The tour was $5 each, (a great price!) - the tour guide was very enthusiastic and covered so much more information then we ever expected to get!

I went with a group of women and enjoyed the tour and a tea luncheon on the porch. While the collections of glassware and furnishings are interesting, I really enjoyed the view and the grounds. The tour guide is very enthusiastic and makes the visit fascinating with stories of the family who lived here and of its Civil War history. Great place to watch fireworks for Boomsday. I believe they regularly offer a special for the event. Worth a visit and a fun place to book a group for a few hours.

The house is amazing in the fact that so much of the furnishings are original. The exterior has been well restored. The Civil War history and the story of Evelyn Hazen just add to the historical significance. Calvin Chapelle, Executive Director, was our tour guide and he has a wonderful command of the history and enthusiasm for the property. Knoxville is indeed lucky that this wonderful property has been restored and preserved for the public to view. Please go visit and support this gem.

The Mabry Hazen house tour provided a glimpse into the life of the fascinating family who lived here for over 100 years. In addition to enjoying the lovely original antiques which furnish the house, we were also fascinated by incredible tales of wealth, loss of wealth, gunfights, love, betrayal and much more. Oh, if those walls could talk........ With his wealth of knowledge about Knoxville, the Mabry/ Hazen families, and antiques ----as well as the Civil War, the tour guide made this a great experience, and I highly recommended it.

Dear Visitor (tigereyes1),The Mabry-Hazen House does its very best to accommodate each one of our visitors. Due to a very small staff, we must sometime close for special appointments. We apologize for your inconvenience. Sincerely,Calvin ChappelleExecutive Director

The Mabry Hazen House in Knoxville, TN has only had several generations, but only two familes to live within its' walls since it was built just before the Civil War in 1858.This home turned museum is not unlike many antebellum mansions that served as headquarters for both Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. What makes it unique is that this stately, elegant home houses perhaps the largest original family collection of artifacts in use up until the 1980's when the last owner passed away and granted the house and its' belongings to be treasured and showcased for ages to come. It is a real treat to walk through this home and see the actual furnishings, china, silverware, artwork, clothing, bedding, and day-to-day articles of living that were used in this very home.It is a rare glimpse into Civil War era life

Our vacation this year was a trip back in time to the Civil War battlefields and historic sites. We took a day and went to Knoxville, touring various sites. I wanted to tour the Mabry House because of its connection with the Civil War but it was a wonderful surprise to hear the story of the Mabry Hazen house. The gentleman who narrated the tour was very knowledgable and nice. When you like what you do it shows in your work and he was so fascinating. I hope the foundation will be able to continue the restoration of this beautiful home.

Dear Visitor (krisjb1),I thought you would be happy to know that a restoration of the Mabry-Hazen House exterior is currently underway, and we have made a lot of progress in the past year. Had you visited during a day in which we were open to the public, I would have gladly informed you as to the efforts we were taking to preserve the building. We are Knoxville's only historic house museum with the full and original family collection, and I can attest to those who are dedicated to it's preservation. Should you ever find yourself in Knoxville again, do not hesitate to contact us for a tour.Sincerely,Calvin ChappelleExecutive Director

It was very meaningful since I was marrying into the Mabry family, the home is just as it was when Evelyn Hazen lived there. It is a very historical place and it was wonderful.

The Mabry Hazen House is a little slice of heaven and a historical gem in Knoxville, TN. We called ahead and arranged this tour and were accommodated without a hitch. Our docent was extremely knowledgeable and it was the best $5 I've spent in a long time. The collection in one of the largest in the US and many of the artifacts are original from three generations of the same family. We also visited the Bethel Cemetery which is down the road but on the original property of the Mabry-Hazen home. Don't miss this!

This house is beautiful, light and airy, and full of the original furnishings. The setting is lovely, situated on a hill, overlooking Knoxville. Our docent was full of information and related her story with enthusiasm and feeling. The house has been occupied only by the original family and so, has authentic family possessions. Don't miss a visit to Mabry Hazen House.
