The trip there Was nice and the kids like the turtle feeding but that Was it. The former prison is a café and you cant se any thing of its former history.

We took a boat from Stone town up to the archapelo prison island. A part from the turtles there is nothing to visit or to see there. Good white sand beaches around. The rooms at the hotels are very expensive for nothing. If you are to waist much time there maybe you need to bring your own food from Ston Town.

We spent a very enjoyable couple of hours here after a pleasant boat ride of just over half an hour. The prison was built but never used for this purpose and became an isolation hospital instead. It is now a hotel. The highlight of the trip was meeting the giant tortoises. They are not native to the island but have been brought over from the Seychelles on a breeding and conservation programme. There are lots of them and they are so friendly. They love to be tickled under the chin! The scenery around this island is awesome. I would recommend this trip.

This place is simply beautiful.Takes about 30minutes to reach by boat from Zanzibar. Great way to spend the day! Note - be careful of the waters! The current is very strong just a few feet out from the shores of the island.

Another historical Zanzibar must-see. A half-hour boat trip over an exquisite piece of ocean takes you to a perfect island with almost artificial aquamarine sea and white powder beaches. The hotel is in total disrepair but there are plenty of giant tortoises to be fed. The view of the sea from the prison building is worth the visit.

Prison Island was serving as prison for rebellious slaves in 19th century. Later, it became quarantine station for patients suffering from yellow fever and therefore it came to be known as Quarantine Island.Nowadays, this island serves as home for more than 200 endangered Aldabra Tortoises from Seychelles, which are huge in size and very old in age. They also hotel and restaurant for tourists. Island is surrounded by beautiful blue sea, where we can go for snorkeling for hours. All in all, one of the best places to visit with close friends and family.

Went here on our last day before flying back from a 2 week stay at the island. There's not a lot to see apart from the big turtles. They are impressive. The beach is tiny and full of boats bringing tourists. Ask your boat captain if they can take you for snorkelling on the north side of the island. We got our boat to ourselves for 30000 tsh including snorkelling. Bargain and find a boat near the old dispensary just passed Mercurys bar.

Paid a nice visit to a originally prison Island which now converted to a turtle resort. About 200 turtles live there and can be visited by the public. the oldest one is 196 years old.

The tortoise sanctuary on the island is great and there are over 100 of them at various ages to see. Be sure to rub their necks as they love it and will stick them out as far as possible for you! Most tours offer snorkeling afterwards at the reef next to the island. Not the most amazing reef, but fun to swim around for a bit.

I recommend a boat trip out to prison island to see the old giant turtles. It is also very relaxing a comfotable atmosphere on the island. Recommend to have a lunch at the restaurant. You can also snorkle or lay on the beach.

The boat ride to the Island was very relaxing as we got closer to the island the beach/view was incredible. It makes a great day out to snorkel/sunbathe on the beach and swim as the sea and beach are very clean. The tortoise are wonderful to watch and feed, they also love a massage! Overall a lovely place and its definitely worth a trip. We booked via our hotel and managed to get a great deal its also much safer this way. We combined it by doing the Stone Town tour in the morning and Prison Island after Lunch.

This was a shame to take tourists to this island where the turtles were starved. We had to pick leaves from the trees to feed them with something after we were told we would feed them with food. This place left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Visited the island as part of a day trip whilst in Zanzibar. The boat ride over was fantastic, and relaxing, and we even got to see flying fish! The island was a strange place. There was a hotel but no-one seemed to be staying there. There was also a couple of restaurants and bars, but again no-one there except people working. The tortoise sanctuary was a bit of a disappointment as it was very much like a zoo, and they didn't seem that well looked after. The snorkeling just off the island was fine, not exceptional, but an enjoyable way to spend an hour or so.I wouldn't rush back here.

I loved our day here - Tortoises that love a massage, wonderful! Great snorkelling too! We booked with the hotel, and got the price down and had a very good guide. Wonderful day!
