This is one of the most stupendous monuments to a colonial power I have ever seen. As I said to my wife, clearly the Spanish felt strongly enough about the value of their colonial possessions in Mexico, Central and South America such that they would fortify San Juan, Puerto Rico in a manner as to turn away all comers who would seek to usurp their claim to the riches of the New World. El Morro is a beautifully maintained property, well run by our fantastic National Park Service and staffed by some of the most cordial park rangers I have ever met. You must see this to appreciate the importance of Puerto Rico to the region and to the United States. Have fun watching the cruise ships enter and depart the harbor, too!

This is a must see attraction in old San Juan. From its ramparts you get a magnificent view of San Juan hill and the rest of the city.

The US Park Service operates this landmark and it's a great place to spend 2-3 hours. I am a bit of a military and history buff so these places are always great fun for me. The fort offers a spectacular view of the water. There is a nice, but small museum on the 5th level. Don't miss the view over the esplanade back towards San Juan and the other fort San Cristobal. Spend a few minutes on your way out across the esplanade to watch the kite flying. Go early to avoid the crowds and before it heats up, then go stroll the streets of OSJ, shop, have lunch.

This Fort is much better maintained then the Castillo de San Cristobal. You can get some great shots of the ocean and San Juan from the Fort.

As with all National Park sites, XCastillo San Felipe del Morro, is a wonderful place to visit and learn. The importance of San Juan harbor and the reason for the fortifications is well explained. The views are magnificent. Interpretive labels, as always, informative. Well worth the time.

500 year old fort which is the single most impressive sightseeing stop, except for the amazing water views everywhere!

This is definitely worth checking out. Had lots of cool information about the history and the importance of this fort and Puerto Rico. I would definitely combine this into a day trip into Old San Juan when you're planning. La Perla is down the street from the fort. I've been told by a native not to venture into this area and as we were walking by, I believe her.

Great site, super views, and much history. The location at the mouth of the bay provides a great view and perspective.

I have visited El Morro Castle over 7 times since 1974. Last time was 2014. It is an amazing architectural piece of history. I do m miss the trees in the entrance promenade (I added a picture to show). You should be able to tour the whole structure in 2 to 3 hours. Best time to visit is during the weekdays, as in the weekends the locals flood the place.The last I knew, an access way was being built so you could exit at the very bottom at sea level and walk around the harbor entrance in a promenade known as Ël Paseo Del Morro, which then connects to another promenade called El Paseo De La Princesa. These are beautiful walks, and together are about half a mile long.Be aware, this was a military installation built by the Spaniards in the mid-1500, so there are no elevators and no handicap access. However, you can enter with a wheelchair and browse the main floor as well as a top floor.

This is a must do in the city. The fort offers amazing views of the ocean, old San Juan, and the beautiful grounds.Allow yourself plenty of time to relax and to walk around. There are many rooms, doors, and crevices to explore and it will take a few hours to see it all.We packed a lunch and ate on the front of the castillio and it was lovely. We have some great pictures and we really enjoyed exploring.This is a kid friendly activity, but keep an eye out because there are few safety rails and little restrictions to where you can go.

This place is spectacular! The weather was glorious the day we visited, pretty windy coming off the water but that made the heat bearable. It is a self-guided tour, which was cool to just go at your own pace. The grounds are pretty expansive so there is a lot of walking involved. The views are phenomenal. Grounds are very well maintained. It is $5 for admission to both this place and Castillo de San Cristobal. There is also a free trolley between locations which is really nice. This place is a must if you're in Old San Juan!

Definitely a must see! Incredible history and beautiful views. An easy free trolley ride from at the Old San Juan bus stop and where you debark the cruise ships.

Helpful and knowledgeable staff. far from taxi drop off point for those with mobility issues. Entry price also includes access to Castillo San Cristobal.

My wife and I (along with another couple) toured the fort after returning to San Juan after a cruise. The fort its self is massive and you will need about two hours to see everything. We didn't have any issues getting around and the informational signs were extremely helpful. They do offer some guided tours so be on the lookout for those. For a $5 entry fee it was absolutely worth the visit!
